This is the sad reality for many children with disabilities who are isolated and outcast by family members and their villages. With few places in Malawi to turn to for support and belonging, programs like these aren’t just life-changing they’re life-saving. When he first visited the COBT clinic,
Kelvin was unable to stand or walk.
He had incredible strength in his arms and was faster walking on his hands than scooting around on his bottom. COBT sent him to be assessed by Orthopaedic Surgeons and they determined they could do surgery on his twisted legs so he could learn to walk!
Kelvin went off to Blantyre where he stayed for the next several months as he had multiple surgeries on his legs. When he returned to Lilongwe, he was able to walk with a walking frame. Kelvin and his family moved to Lilongwe after his surgery so that he could attend our Children’s Rehabilitation Program and Preschool. He eventually learned how to walk with crutches and then independently!
